As a kid, I struggled to play. As I sat on the sidelines and watched others having fun, I often felt separate, apart, and lonely, wishing I was out there playing too. I was molested the summer before my sixth birthday, while playing a game of hide and seek with a group of kids. It happened at a moment when I had been feeling free, happy, excited, and even like a big girl. I decided that playing games wasn’t a good idea – it wasn’t safe. “I don’t play games” became the mantra that constricted me, because the truth is, life is one big amazing game! The question or mantra I chant in my head now is: “How am I going to play this game today?” I flipped the script, and now I bring play into everything I do, including being an improvisational actor for 20+ years. I am excited to use the games of Spolin improv in many different arenas to get people to open up, to have fun, to be present, and to connect to their inner truth and intuition!
